National Night Out/Movie in the Park 2010

The Eastside Neighborhood Association in Oceanside is hosting their second annual National Night Out on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010, with lots of fun activities starting at 5:30 p.m. and once again a movie night at Joe Balderrama Park at 709 San Diego Street, in Oceanside, CA. The activities will include affordable food vendors; face panting; and resource tables from local crime, gang, drug, and alcohol and tobacco prevention organizations. Parents can also ensure the safety of their children by obtaining an identification card with their child’s picture and fingerprints provided by the Kiwanis Club. A family friendly movie will begin at dusk. All activities are FREE!

The now popular National Night Out has been celebrated for decades in many communities across America on the first Tuesday in August as a symbol to fight against crime. The Eastside Neighborhood Association (ENA) in Oceanside has taken this event very seriously and uses it to promote a safe environment free of crime, alcohol and drugs. “We are trying to motivate residents to become involved with their community and help them understand that their involvement is important and they can make a positive difference in our community,” said Maria Russell, president of the Association.

Safe and Sober Summer Campaign Kick-Off

NCPC has launched an underage drinking prevention and social host enforcement campaign this summer. The Safe and Sober Summer Campaign consists of various efforts to help remind and alert the Tri-City region community about the consequences of allowing underage drinking. The three strategies utilized for this campaign are advertisements on the North County Transit District (NCTD) buses; banners with a prevention message; and mini-grant awards, to the Tri-City law enforcement agencies, of $2,000 to help promote and utilize Social Host Ordinances in the cities of Carlsbad, Oceanside, and Vista.

Based on local community surveys and focus groups with both youth and adults, and surveys collected from local law enforcement agencies, house parties are a primary source of alcohol for teens, and a primary location where teen drinking occurs.

The advertisements on the NCTD buses have bilingual messages in Spanish and are traveling the region in eight different buses saying that “Allowing UNDERAGE DRINKING in your party is AGAINST THE LAW!” The banner, has been posted in the heart of the city of Vista with a prevention message, also bilingual, that says “Providing ALCOHOL to MINORS is Against the Law!” The mini-grants will assist law enforcement agencies enforce social host ordinances to create more public awareness and the dangers of underage drinking.

The funding for this effort is part of Vista Community Clinic’s STOP Act grant from SAMHSA/Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. The purpose of the STOP Act (Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Drinking) is to prevent and reduce underage drinking in communities throughout the United States.

Alcohol ordinance soon to reach compliance deadline in the city of Vista

The Responsible Alcohol Sales and Service (RBSS) Ordinance approved late last year will reach its compliance period in June 2010. The new ordinance mandates that all employees of businesses that sell and serve alcohol complete a state certified training course every two years. Current businesses and their employees had 180 days to comply with this ordinance from its effective date.

Día del Niño 2010 Celebration on April 24th

The Eastside Neighborhood Association is proud to announce its 6^th annual “Día del Niño” celebration (translates from Spanish: Day of the Child), a children’s festival will be on Saturday, April 24^th, 2009 from 10am to 2pm at Joe Balderrama Park, 709 San Diego Street in Oceanside.

This free event that will feature entertainment for everyone in the family including live performances, wrestling exhibitions, rock climbing, a bounce house, face painting, information booths, games and prices, food for sale, and lots of other fun things.

420 Remix at Boomers! on April 20th

Once again, The North Coastal Prevention Coalition will sponsor the 420 Remix, A Celebration of Sober and Drug Free Life Choices, in an attempt to counter the popular pro-marijuana notion by providing youth with an alternative activity on April 20^th.

The 420 Remix offers youth the opportunity to enjoy a fun, safe and healthy afternoon instead of smoking marijuana. The event will be on Tuesday April 20th, 2010 from 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at Boomers! in Vista, CA. All students in grades 6 through 9 from Carlsbad, Oceanside, and Vista are encouraged to come to Boomers! The 420 Remix event is free, but a student I.D. is required.

Parents are welcome to attend and visit resource booths with information on preventing and treating youth substance use.
